Analysis of Climate Civil Society in Latin America and the Caribbean Toward a Regional Initiative for the Independent Global Stocktake WORKING PAPER The objective of this document is to examine the conditions and interests of civil society organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean, identifying strengths, opportunities and challenges to advance climate objectives in the current political context. The interests of civil society in a regional initiative for the Independent Global Assessment (iGST) and its possible activities and functions are explored. Significant differences were found within civil society in terms of agendas, scope and organizational structure. Although there are significant financial and political challenges, there is considerable support for the climate agenda and interest in the iGST initiative. However, issues were identified that could limit the engagement of civil society organizations in the iGST, such as the lack of a clear vision and path of action towards the Independent Global Assessment in 2023 and the gap between national and international climate commitments. its actual implementation. Esto afecta gravemente la calidad del aire, agua y suelo en las regiones cercanas, especialmente comunidades rurales con recursos limitados, que sufren deterioro en su salud y calidad de vida.
