Analysis of Climate Civil Society in Latin America and the Caribbean Toward a Regional Initiative for the Independent Global Stocktake WORKING PAPER
The objective of this document is to examine the conditions and interests of civil society organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean, identifying strengths, opportunities and challenges to advance climate objectives in the current political context. The interests of civil society in a regional initiative for the Independent Global Assessment (iGST) and its possible activities and functions are explored. Significant differences were found within civil society in terms of agendas, scope and organizational structure. Although there are significant financial and political challenges, there is considerable support for the climate agenda and interest in the iGST initiative. However, issues were identified that could limit the engagement of civil society organizations in the iGST, such as the lack of a clear vision and path of action towards the Independent Global Assessment in 2023 and the gap between national and international climate commitments. its actual implementation. Recommendations are proposed to promote stronger engagement in a regional iGST initiative, including enhancing the meaning and contextual relevance of iGST at the regional level and considering the human and financial constraints of regional climate civil society.
